Author’s Corner

One of the things that sets Harpeth Road Press apart from others is our willingness to keep our authors up to date on both best practices and ways to have a career in writing. Every newsletter, we'll have the Author's Corner, a place where aspiring authors and established authors who want to stay up to date on all the latest can come for information from a reliable source.

In our very first newsletter, we had the 5 most important things we think an author can do for a career in writing. In case you missed it, we’ve posted it below. (To be sure you don’t miss any more Author’s Corner posts, be sure to sign up for our newsletter at the bottom of our homepage.)

1. Write or edit every day. Practice makes perfect, right? Wrong. Practice makes books. The more you practice your craft, the better you will become and the more material you will have.

2. Read. Read books in your genre--find out where your book would fit in the bookstore and read those authors like crazy. Study what they do for conflict, character arcs, emotional tension, and the like. Take notes! Read books on writing, editing, character development, plot--whatever you think you might need to move your writing ahead.

3. Choose your information sources wisely. There's a lot of advice out there and it isn't all great. Look to respected sources for your writing and publishing information. Pay attention to publishers with books you'd buy, authors who are selling well, or agents who make great deals.

4. Be an author on your author socials. On your social media feeds, post what your ideal readers would want to see. When you go to the feed of your favorite romantic movie channel (we won't name drop here), you will only find posts about relative, on-brand content. Always be yourself but keep the interests of your reader in mind. Bring the readers to your circles and the sales will come.

5. Find authors in your genre that you love, who do a really professional, amazing job at presenting themselves online, and pay attention to what they do. They are your crash course in how to be the best at what you do.
